- Setting: Provence, France, 1900-1905(ish)
- Character: Alain Sébastien Dupont, b. 1869
- Education & Occupation: Mentorship with prominent Marseille city councilmen. Has studied law in Paris. Works in politics.
- Talents and skills: Legal matters, finance, speaking publically and public relations.
- Summary: After their parents' demise in a tragic carriage accident ten years prior, Alain has kept his sister, Germaine, under legal guardianship. He's a politician in the city council of Marseille and wants to advance, but the negative attention she keeps getting for being unmarried and writing "unseemly" material works against him. Rather than trying to find a fiancé for her, he has forbidden her to publish anything more and made a contract with her publisher that they won't distribute her work any longer. Meanwhile, he is running for mayor in Marseille and is eventually elected as the youngest man ever to be in office. A couple of years after this, Germaine manages to get a Parisian publishing house to publish her manifesto, Frater Germanus, in which she reveals that he has made advances on her and is furthermore corrupt. The consequences of this publication are vast and he is eventually booted and divorced by his wife, Jeanne, ending up fleeing to Italy to start over, though he continues to try and ruin Germaine's reputation and new career from afar.
- Relationships: Married to Jeanne (née Bernard), though it's more a connection of convenience than one of love. They each use the other to advance as much as possible in the respective environments. Is known to have affairs with other politians' wives, daughters and sisters to further his own ambitions. Also frequents prostitutes.
